This month on Open Apple, we sit down with Mark Lemmert, co-founder of 6502 Workshop. Him and his partners (Mike Reimer, Bill Giggie, Robert Padovan, Gordon Mackay, and Galactagog) have been building Nox Archaist, a brand new story-driven tile-based role-playing game in the classical Ultima style. They’re pushing the hardware as far as they can with this new engine, working to break new ground in scope, story, animation, sound, and music. Early builds look great, and we’re really excited to see more!

Mark’s journey with the Apple II parallels a lot of us. The machine sparked an interest in programming, and a fascination with RPGs and tile engines in particular. Nox Archaist is the fulfillment of that childhood dream to build such a game from scratch. Mark shares his war stories (that many of us can relate to) of strewing our childhood computers with half-baked game engines that were doomed from the start. As he and his team are proving, it’s never too late to revive and achieve that dream.

Open Apple #65.5 (December 2016) : Mike Whalen At KansasFest

This week on Open Apple, we run a special piece of extra content, courtesy of friend-of-the-show Mike Whalen. Mike brought his mobile audio production gear to KansasFest back in July, and he captured a series of interviews and biographies during the event. He has graciously agreed to let us run it here on our feed. It’s wonderfully produced, and a great way to get a feel for what KansasFest is all about. If you’re on the fence about attending KFest in 2017, this will certainly sway you into joining us for all the Apple II fun.


This month on Open Apple, we sit down with Kate Szkotnicki, long time Apple II fan and new addition to the retro community. We chat about her first impressions as a newcomer to the community, and the big splash she made at her first KansasFest. Kate is a cosplayer and frequent attendee of anime and comic cons, so she brought a very fresh set of skills and perspectives to KansasFest. Her presentation on making plastic parts (and candy!) with silicone moulding was very popular. Throw away your 3D printers- this is easier and better.

We also talk lots about John Brooks’ excellent work on updating ProDOS, Quinn says a bunch of stuff about Commodore that probably isn’t true, and Mike falls on his sword for getting everything wrong about Australian Apple II gatherings. Mike gets a record number of Apple /// references into this episode, so be sure to tune in and ignore that.

Breaking news! Between us recording and releasing this show, John Brooks has updated ProDOS to 2.4.1. Also, we worked out that the MegaBeep ROM is in fact compatible with it, contrary to the opening of the show. Listener James reported an issue that we believe was actually a bad ROM. If you are a MegaBeep owner, don’t hesitate to use it with any version of ProDOS, including John Brooks’ excellent new 2.4 updates.

This month on Open Apple we present an early holiday gift, in the form of an epic three hour episode. We sit down for a great conversation with Apple II legend Randy Brandt, perhaps best known for his work at Beagle Bros. We go deep on Beagle Bros, exploring the making of their quirky, innovative software and the wacky characters that produced it. Never one to rest on his laurels, Randy is now helping to produce a modern reboot of Beagle Bros’ only major game release, I/O Silver. The game will be released very soon as of when you’re reading this, and it runs on all major mobile platforms. Look for it in an Apple App Store or Google Play Store near you.

If that’s not enough, we have a huge pile of news to talk about this month, joined together by the most epic series of segues ever to grace the history of podcasting. We talk Transwarps, we talk Woz, we talk Neuromancer, we talk Wizardry, we talk to our listeners, and we talk smack. That’s just how we roll here on Open Apple. In addition, we have the unfortunate duty to recognize the passing of some Apple II luminaries- Bob Bishop and Mike Pfaiffer. The Apple II community is great because of a lifetime of hard work by many talented people. Join us as we remember the contributions of two of those people.

Don’t worry, there’s much Apple II stuff to be thankful for in this month of American Thanksgiving. So put down the turkey leg and get caught up on ye olde stripey Apple. The biggest episode of Open Apple ever!

Mike Maginnis Mike Maginnis Mike has been an Apple II user since 1982. In 1998, he began the Computist Project to scan and post the entire run of Computist magazine.  This effort has since evolved into the Apple II Scans website, an extensive and ever-growing collection of Apple II and /// related documentation.  He has written for Juiced.GS and was the lead technical editor for A2Central.  Mike created and co-hosted No Quarter, a now-defunct weekly podcast dedicated to classic arcade gaming, and occasionally blogs about his Apple II passions at 6502Lane. Mike is a former United States Marine and now lives in Colorado where he works as a technical writer for DISH Network.
 QD_HeadshotQuinn Dunki Quinn has been an Apple II user since 1981. She’s an active hacker of all things retrocomputing, in both hardware and software. She blogs these efforts over at Blondihacks. When she’s not obsessively shaving cycles out of 6502 code, Quinn is writing apps on mobile devices for her consulting company, One Girl One Laptop Productions. Prior to that, she had a long career in AAA video game development, including stops at Bungie, 3DO, and Pandemic Studios. If she’s not in front of the computer, you can find her behind the wheel of (or lying underneath) a janky race car with her 24 Hours of LeMons team.

A Brief History of Open Apple

Open Apple first aired in February 2011 with its original hosts and co-creators, Ken Gagne and Mike Maginnis, and broadcast monthly until March 2014, when Gagne left the show. After a brief hiatus Open Apple returned in July with Quinn Dunki, who appeared as a guest that month before joining us in August as our new co-host.

The (now-retired) “Name the Game” segment was stolen frominspired by a similar feature on Xbox Live’s Major Nelson podcast.

Mike’s recording hardware consists of an AT2035 Cardioid Condenser Microphone and Blue Microphones Icicle USB pre-amp with shock mount, desktop microphone stand, and pop filter.  Rogue Amoeba’s Audio Hijack is used to capture his audio stream.

Quinn kicks her rhymes for the ages on a Samson Go Mic, and records her audio using Rogue Amoeba’s Piezo utility ($15).

Discussions are held over Skype, recorded and edited with Audacity, Audio Hijack, Piezo, and Levelator, and published with WordPress, Blubrry, and Feedburner.

Over the years, the site’s content has been created and maintained using a variety of software, including Dark Room, TextWrangler, Windows Live Writer, MarsEdit, GraphicConverter, Transmit, and Safari.  These days, we mostly just use the WordPress dashboard.

The site was created and largely maintained by Ken Gagne until his departure in April 2014.  Since then Mike and Quinn have assumed site administration duties.
